Timber in the Bathroom: What You Need To Know
Traditionally, timber has been a no-go in spaces exposed to wet areas frequently. Some timber absorbs and releases moisture quickly since it cannot regulate its moisture level. It swells, expands, and buckles. However, when timber is treated correctly, you won’t have any problems with it in a bathroom.
If you are 100% keen on putting in timber, explore everything you need to know throughout this blog.
Can You Even Use Timber in a Bathroom?
Timber is a classic material, but can you incorporate it into a bathroom? Yes! You’re not limited by vinyl and tile; there’s so much more on the horizon for interior design.
The key to using timber successfully is coating it with a high-quality waterproof sealant to protect it from moisture, humidity, and temperature changes. This barrier prevents issues such as rotting, warping, or swelling over time.
This sealant should be re-applied often since it wears down over time. But in short, it’s useable!
Why (and how) to use several types of timber!
- Use it as a feature benchtop, a timber vanity unit, open shelving, timber baths, basins, window, or door trimmings, and of course, gorgeous timber flooring. That said, solid timber is pricier than timber veneers, but it depends on the type specifically you’re using.
- Soft timber is flexible and accommodates movement from top to bottom. It’s also nice to walk on, warm, slip-resistant, and has a natural scent to it. Recycled Australian hardwood flooring is denser and more stable than soft wood.
- Engineered timber, which uses around 8mm of hardwood on the top and bottom layers with a softwood layer sandwiched in the middle.
- Timber blends with any colour, pattern or design choice, such as the natural tone of pebble floors, mirror cabinets, a wall hung basin wall tiles or a stone top.

Why might authentic timber not be for your bathroom?
- Sometimes, timber veneer works in your favour more than solid types. A high-pressure laminate on a substrate such as ply or chipboard gives it that appearance.
- Although a warm style for any bathroom, feel free to make use of timber as a feature rather than the primary element of the space. Try wall panelling on the outside. If you want it to look like a rustic sauna, go ahead.
Getting timber floors installed depends on if the space is in good shape, if you will maintain it well, refrain from leaving puddles of water around, or if your renovation requires a building consent.
